Playstation 3 resolution mystery revealed
People that don’t want to read any bad (or less good) things about the Playstation 3 should probably ignore this post as a part of the mystery about game resolutions has been revealed. It appears that Sony’s black box doesn’t always natively render games in 720P or 1080P as often advertised, but quite a bit lower sometimes.
It’s not really all that surprising that a lot of PS3 games don’t run in 720P or 1080P, since the main competitor, Xbox 360 is pretty much doing the same thing with Project Gotham Racing 3 or Halo 3, which only runs in 640P instead of 720P or higher. However, it was thus far believed by many people that the Playstation 3 would natively render most games in 720P or higher, but on the Beyond3D forums, a few people have created a list with a bunch of games and their native resolution to prove these fanboys otherwise. While we won’t bore you with all the details of how they actually came up with these resolutions, you can read it for yourself if you start at the beginning of the thread. In the list below you’ll also find some Xbox 360 versions as comparison material. Some games also have the level of anti-aliasing listed, which is a popular method to reduce jaggies and make everything appear much smoother. This requires much processing power from the GPU and therefore not every game uses it, especially when using high resolutions.

You shouldn’t care too much about these numbers because if the game looks good to you, who cares in what resolution it runs or what kind of anti-aliasing method is being used.

I’ve had enougth of people saying Sony where arrogant, when? when did they actually say the ps3 will crush the competition, they may have been confident and they have every right to be, the ps3 is brilliant and gaining momentum in sales. U just assume they where arrogant because the ps2 dominated the last gen and now the ps3 didn’t get of to a great start, it was just people who where saying the ps3 will dominate again because the ps2 did, not Sony, it doesn’t matter though because those people where right the tide is turning, just look at the recent sales surges. I’m also a big fan of the Wii and hope it does extremely well in the long run as well as the ps3. They are both goin to leave the 360 in the dust.

Not arrogance, confidence becaus it is a true comment, as much as i like the Wii it cannot reach the next-gen potential that the ps3 offers, the Wii is next-gen but in a different direction, the 360 still use dvd’s, what’s the difference between the 360 and the xbox? except using more power on a dated format.

U have seen the recent sales surges in America, Japan and France have u not? plus constant strong sales in Europe particularly Germany and over here in good old Blighty. The next gen war is far from over I agree but u can’t deny the ps3 is gaining momentum with it’s biggest games yet to be released.
The ps3 is like a bottle of merlot, its not worth drinking right after its made, you have to give it time, let it age. Then once its ready to be consumed after years of aging…..the xbox 720 comes out and makes the PS3 look like a pile of shit.
I feel sorry for u, being to stubborn to get a ps3 with all the great games currently out and brilliant line up for 2008, what r u going to playing in 2008? nothing the 360 actually has nothing. You’ll just have to scrape together all the DLC for H3(overrated) and GOW and play online, constantly playing the same two games and doing the same things online over and over again till GOW 2 is out in 2009.

I happen to own both consoles and suggesting that the PS3 is the only way to: “experience a real gaming machine” (correcting your bad spelling), is sad and childish. Both systems have some excellent exclusive games, both have some utter crap games and both have just the same multi-platform games. The 360 has reliability issues, the PS3 doesn’t have the polished online service that the 360 does. The 360 I can message across all games, the PS3 has Blu-Ray.
Stop being a numpty and realise that both consoles have their strengths and weaknesses and just enjoy playing games without the need for ‘mine is better than yours’!

This list is full of examples of both the 360 and PS3 upscaling. How does this make the PS3 look ‘bad’? The majority of the PS3 resolutions are higher as well. Best contender for the HD badge is PS3 then - well done.
This article isn’t about a 360 vs PS3 contest. The point is that despite all Sony’s bitching about HD awesomeness, the majority of PS3 games isn’t in high definition.
Potential hd awesomeness, if the exclusives look this good now and they arn’t using there full potential, imagine what they could eventually be like, compared to the 360 which is already been used to full (it’s what u get for using an old format.

I agree with MU on this one. We are in a great time for gaming. All the systems have their unique strengths and weakness. Just recently I added the third gem to my crown and now I own all three systems. I like them all for one reason or another. What I think gamers should really be bitching about is how software developers totally fuckin screw all of us cross platform style by releasing the same old shit with sharper resolution. FPS=doom from 18 years ago…it was cool back then, but were is the dynamic synergy? where are the truly next gen concepts. COD1 is the same shit as COD4 with prettier colors. Why do publishers charge 60 bucks for a game someone can beat in 5 hours during finals week? Like halo3, COD4, assassins creed, heavenly sword, ROTSS, etc. We all need to stop drawing lines in the sand about which console is better and stand together against publishers so they start making decent lasting, and truely unique and awe inspiring games. Anyone remeber the feeling they had when they first played super mario brothers? Or Final fantasy? I want that feeling back. And after spending thousands of dollars over the years on the newest game systems…it seems that surreal “suspened disbelief” is gone.

Yep PS3 sucks…that is why i finally got rid of my ‘5th’ 360 and bought the Playstation…so much better. The neighbors are jumping on board as well. Everyone is tired of Microsoft.

I am not sure how everyone keeps saying that Halo3 is only at 640p. I am looking at the back of the box and the outputs are 720p/1080i/1080p.
