Sony’s PS3 shoots up by 300% in US

Whilst Sony has been struggling to sell its PlayStation 3 to the world mainly due to its over-priced status and arguably weak line-up of exclusive games, now the Japanese company has something to shout about after recently bringing in a price drop to the North American market.

Sony's PlayStation 3 finally gets back in the gameA report over on UK trade publication MCV highlights how the reduction in price over in North America has stimulated sales of the next generation PlayStation 3 platform. Sony’s Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer has previously gone on record to state the system was about to make a breakthrough in the large market, but people remained sceptical. However, now figures have emerged that indicate since 2nd November sales have rocketed by 298% in comparison to October’s numbers, with sales over the Thanksgiving period being 245% higher than the same period last year.

This comes hot on the heels of news that the PlayStation 3 has out-sold Nintendo’s Wii for the second week in a row over in Japan, following a whole year of being shunned into second place in the next generation stakes. Not only has the new white model and lower-priced PlayStation 3 upped its game, though, but the PlayStation Portable Slim model (which was confirmed as selling a million units in Japan by Sony recently) continues to nip at the heels of the Nintendo DS and out-pace the Wii on a weekly basis. For reference, below is last week’s Japanese hardware results:

Format This Week Last Week 2007 Sales Lifetime Sales
Nintendo DS 76,084 78,884 6,037,183 20,042,862
PlayStation Portable 65,609 58,964 2,310,547 6,842,676
PlayStation 3 39,178 55,924 883,746 1,341,304
Wii 36,230 34,546 2,896,660 3,816,303
PlayStation 2 8,855 9,043 667,628 20,822,487
Xbox 360 6,525 5,817 195,241 459,943
Game Boy Advance 262 923 50,165 15,348,244
GameCube 38 69 10,341 4,179,809

“Whilst Sony has been struggling to sell its PlayStation 3 to the world”

Bit of a retarded thing to say considering that the PS3 has shifted more units in its first year than the 360 did. But hey, don’t let facts get in the way.

Have you not been following the PS3’s performance in the US so far? It’s been crushed by the Xbox 360. Also, who said anything about the 360 being a major success? The story certainly doesn’t say that. The fact of the matter is that the PS3 has indeed been a disaster for Sony when compared to the PSone, PS2 and even PSP.

Hey Adam, if you could stop waking off while staring at your shit box 180 for a second and look at the numbers in the graphic above. You might want to scope out the life time sales column. I’m not sure what your definition of “crushed” is in crazy land, but here in the real world I’d hardly call it crushed. Your just upset cause you realize now how much money you wasted on your slowly dieing machine and that Sony is now once again dominating as it always has, as if that’s really a surprise to anyone. Now shut your yap and go play Halo 3 (or should I say Hype Fest 3) for like the 90th time because I’m sure its not nearly played out yet.

Those are the sales figures for Japan, you retard.

And dominating is currently a very long way from being true.

Still playing catch up and surge of sales now and again when the average sustainable sales are pish doesn’t make it look like they will be “dominating” anything very soon.

damn straight scott ps3 is the best and will continue selling

Its sold more consoles in its first year than the Xbox did and at a much higher price.

With the price lower the sales dirrerence are only going to increase as the fact s of the matter are that the PS3 is the superior system in every respect.

Backwards compatiblity ??? Nuff Said.

Comment by AugustusBot on 2007-11-28 19:32:25 | Reply

you’re retarded.

the 360 isn’t 100% backwards compatible. the same can be argued for the ps3. it can still support ps games, but not ps2 if you got the new cheap model.

damn straight. even though this article only speaks about “lifetime sales in JAPAN”, it doesn’t really elude to any lifetime sales in the US, and i also have a inside scoop on how many units are actually selling each week, US and Japan, and those number listed above are, i hate to say it, but are slightly adjusted to make the ps3 seem a bit more successful than it really is right now.

you have to think logically sometimes when reading this stuff guys. Scott above mentioned halo 3, or hype fest 3 (which i agree with by the way), but when bringing that game up alone for the 360, the game itself sold 3 million plus copies, but the numbers above only show lifetime sales in Japan at nearly half a mil. I guess that means that everybody with one 360 purchased 3 copies of halo 3 right? wrong!! use logic.

but regardless of all of that, we all know that every household is playing the ps3 and if they aren’t right now, they will be. the ps3 is by far the best system out right now, and after this new year, everybody will see that. as soon as hype fest 3 dies down, and the ps3 gets so many more awesome games released next year, then the ps3 might even surpass the 360’s sales one day. i dont have a 360, but i know a lot of people who do, and most of them only play halo 3.. that’s not much to brag about for one system. anyways, this time next year, i believe that the ps3 will have a good chance of “actually” having more lifetime sales than any other system out there, especially the $hi+Box540.

Check the most played list for games on Xbox Live. There are far more games than just Halo 3 being played constantly.

As for the PS3 catching up, they’ll have to drop the price (for the good version of the system, mind you) to about $200 before it even gets close. Although, Sony should have done that before, knowing what a miserable deal they were selling.

Hey Scott, you’re an idiot. The 360 has, to this date, ABSOLUTELY CRUSHED any and all sales over the Piece of Shit 3. Those numbers shown above are for Japan only MORON. They’re not showing the US sales in this article because it would embarass the hell out of the PS3 and all of the people who own one, and since this is a SONY biased website, that would be only stupid, since Retards like you believe anything that anybody writes. People and followers, like yourself, like to buy the things that they “think” are IN STYLE, so by propping up numbers and stats for a system that they need to sell (PS3), it makes it seem like “the popular thing out”, which will lure even more idiots like yourself to go out and buy one.

“yourmomma”… You’re a multiple personality psycho. You preach that the PS3 is the best thing out there, but all of the facts you’re stating are clearly contradicting those statements. Nice!! You and Scott should seek counseling.

“They’re not showing the US sales in this article because it would embarass the hell out of the PS3″, u do realise that Sony r the only ones that post the actual sales figures of the ps3 whilst MS and Nimtendo only post how many they have shipped.

Nice wolfcastle, you and scorn are two peas in a pod. Hahaha… I don’t even have to comment on either of you with two wonderful promoters like yourselves making an embarrassement out of yourselves word by word.

Now go play your Pile of Shit 3. I’m bored.

Comment by Scorn on 2007-11-30 14:11:51 | Reply

Rather be a pea in a pod than a turd in the toilet.

Forgive my childishness all, but when speaking to an 8 year old i may as well act like one

I agree with Adam 100%

Again someone else that provides facts and what is the quality of the counter argument that he is faced with?

“adam shut up ps3 kicks shit box 360’s ass”

Nice, you do realise folks that making this the grounding for your argument only goes to prove what has just been said?

Comment by Scorn on 2007-11-30 08:55:00 | Reply

Now there is a surprise

Comment by The_Glovner on 2007-11-30 12:12:33 | Reply

You could really explain yourself a bit better if you are going to make a comment like that.

What’s a surprise?

The fact that I agree and you are just being sarcastic?

The fact that the quality of the counter argument is no better than usual?

That once again no facts can be produced to confirm the counter argument?

Just at least have the decency if you are going to reply of filling it with some substance rather than just taking your “I’m better than you attitude and don’t owe you any explanation”.

Comment by Scorn on 2007-11-30 14:08:42 | Reply

Sorry Glovner that would be sarcastic answer number one just to clarify.

So your teeling me that you agree with the following

“The PS3 has been crushed” - If both consoles were on the same time line i would agree but they are not so you cant compare like for like. The fact of the matter is that the PS3 sales are increasing where the xbox 360’s are not.

You agree that Adam is a moron for this article even though it quite clearly states that he has attached the Japan sales data for reference. Not relevant but that hardly makes him a moron perhaps people should read the post before shouting thier big mouths off.

Only bit cause im bored at work, normally i wouldnt give your comments the time of day cause they are always the same

Comment by The_Glovner on 2007-12-03 20:24:37 | Reply

Still got the i’m better than you attitude that seems to go hand in hand with being a PS3 fanboy though so i see.

Comment by storm on 2007-11-30 16:24:55 | Reply

what are you on about? xbox is better then ps3? That’s your opinion now if someone’s going to get a next gen console what will they get? Most likely a ps3 so stop bitching and just play with what you have because ps3 is getting more sales and hasn’t been “Crushed”

Comment by Subrosian on 2007-11-30 20:45:11 | Reply

^^ THE WII PWNZ YOU ALL!!! lol
