“Europeans don’t mind the wait”. Is that so?

In what is an astonishing interview with SCE World Europe Vice President, Jamie MacDonald, he claims that us Europeans don’t mind that we have to wait an extra four months for the console. That’s funny, I don’t remember him asking me.

“What would you say to consumers who like Sony and want to buy your products, but perhaps feel that because they’re in Europe they’re always last in line?

European consumers have shown that historically they don’t mind that, because they end up buying as many PlayStations, if not more, than the US and Japan. In Europe, it doesn’t seem that the release of our platforms after the US and Japan - in the long run - affects how consumers feel.”

Basing things on history is not the best way to go, because history never repeats itself apparently. The ignorance of this man is truely shocking. As Vice President for Europe (which, by the way, is the largest market there is for Sony), you would have thought he would at least apologise, regardless of who’s fault it is. No such luck. Just dent Sony further. The interview continues to get more amusing.

Later on in the same interview, MacDonald made another funny remark, this time about Sony’s failed UMD format:

“I think you’ll find in general the market for movies on discs of any type is not particularly great at the moment.”

This guy clearly watches no films, lives in a cave and has never heard of a magical thing called DVDs. But wait, my fellow readers, it gets better.

“What do you think of the Wii-60 concept - the suggestion that for the same price as a PS3, consumers could pick up a Nintendo Wii and an Xbox 360? Is that something that concerns you?”

To be honest, I haven’t heard that.”

Is he serious? Who hasn’t heard of such a term. After all, it was all over the internet for a good few weeks. Then again, can you get broadband in a cave?

I honestly find this guys attitude completely infuriating. Of course Europe mind having to wait. It wouldn’t be so bad if the rest of the world had to wait, but the US and Japan both get it first. It is dissapointing, for a once respected company like Sony, to come out with these comments only causes further damage. It is a shame to see because I once loved Sony, but the way they have been with all their lies and false release dates just shows a complete lack of respect for consumers, especially with the inflamed prices. No doubt I will eventually get one, but it definitely won’t be at launch, or for a few years after that.

Apparently, us Europeans aren’t the slightest bit bothered about the delay…

You can read the full interview here. In fairness he doesn’t make a complete fool of himself, but ignorance shines through.

The PS3 is cheap, too.

I would never of brought one in November as there aren’t enough release games that interest me i would of waited a few months before getting it, just like i did with my Xbox360. So makes no difference to me if we have to wait till March. However a bit more humility from him wouldn’t have gone amiss.

I wasn’t getting one anyway, but this is just not normal… You simpy cannot say that… it’s like saying, “hey son! you won’t get any money this month, or the one after, but I know you don’t care”

Given that they’ve said you’ll be able to install Linux on it, I’d have been tempted to arrange getting people contributing towards one for xmas. However, between that and price gouging Europeans, I decided that my money is going towards a 360. Battery recalls, root-kit viruses on their music CDs, overcharging for inferior UMDs, suing grey importers to protect their European markups… it’s just too much to accept from a company. I decided that the only way to show to Sony how wrong their opinions about European gamers are is to boycott their products (PS3, PSP, TVs, the lot).
