PS3 budget range to launch in Japan, Platinum range “likely”

For the past two generations, Sony has re-released many of its best-selling titles under the monicker of “PlayStation The Best” in Japan, “Greatest Hits” in North America and “Platinum” in Europe and Oceania. This practice looks set to continue, with Sony Japan recently announcing that the first of their “The Best” titles will hit store shelves on March 19 for the princely sum of Y3,619 ($US34).

Resistance: Fall of Man, Ridge Racer 7, FolksSoul (Folklore), Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Gundam: Target in Sight will be the first titles released as part of the budget range, with more to come over time.

Cheap Resistance - coming soon

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe was asked when it would be launching its platinum range, with a spokeperson for the company stating

“We have introduced a Platinum range of best selling titles for all of our platforms to date, and it is likely that we will do so in the future for PS3. However, no decisions have yet been made on timing or lineup.”

So for those of you gaming on a shoestring budget, you’ll soon be able to sample some of the PlayStation 3’s best (and worst, in the case of Gundam) for around half the cost of the average new game.
