Gran Turismo on PS3 to feature vehicle deformation
The Gran Turismo racing franchise has just been revitalised here in Europe thanks to the release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, the demo version of the impending full scale title, with the sampler hitting the PlayStation Network just yesterday (Friday, 28th March). But what extras can be expected in the final version, which is due to be launched sometime during 2009?
Speaking with GamerTV, it seems that the creator of the Gran Turismo series, Kazunori Yamauchi-san, has gone on record to discuss a few aspects of this eagerly anticipated fifth main entry. One particularly intriguing snippet from his interview was about how gamers looking for vehicle deformation will certainly not have to wait too long indeed.
“We really, really want to put damage onto our vehicles. We’ve had a lot of discussions with the manufacturers and, although at the beginning they hated the idea of deformation, now they’re slowly coming around to it. We’ve still got a few to convince, but we will. Expect deformation in the very near future: very, very soon. Obviously, we wanted to do a next-gen Gran Turismo. When the PS3 appeared, we realised that we needed a lot of time to develop properly on this hardware, so we gave ourselves four years to come up with a complete programme. As a result, you’re not going to get Gran Turismo all in one go, but gradually, adding online elements and features as we go. The good thing is that it’ll have a long, long lifespan.”
Yamauchi-san did offer up some words of apology since some people have been expecting a next generation version of Gran Turismo all in one helping, rather than in small portions. However, he did state that the PlayStation Network releases will help to extend the lifespan of the game in the long run and lets his team gather any necessary feedback from users in order to implement as much as possible into future releases.
Other subjects covered by Yamauchi-san are how, jokingly, his team puts so much more research into the cars than the average manufacturer, as well as how an online element has been top of his priority list since the release of Gran Turismo 3. And then finally it seems that Sony’s Home has inspired the team for its garage feature, with it being based on an “avatar system like Home. We’re keen to work with avatar systems like Home, and in turn have been inspired by them.”

I’ve got a great feature they could add to the final game or if they are feeling generous to GT5 Prologue, it is a radical idea though so may be tough to implement, take a deep breath!?!
How about letting us play our mates online by creating a private server and inviting them in, radical yes i know, i am sure though they could crack this tough nut.
Other than that GT5 Prologue is bloody fantastic so they haven’t got to do much in my eyes.
Holy shit! Is that actual graphics? Best. Looking. Racing. Game. Ever.
Yeah hurry it up and finish the game already!
besides graphics there aint much improvement here. just the same old gamplay (boring). one part they really need to improve, that no one has mentioned is the rally aspect (it really sucked when compared to other rally titles).
this game is awsome in all ways posieble
I purchased GT5 Prologue this morning.
I always was a big GT fan.
When the demo came out, I thought it was far away from what Sony was showing us with official screen shots.
Now I dished out 40 euros (that’s $60) for a game that does not look good and lacks speed feeling. In addition, the unlocking system is very painful and long. I felt like I was punished.
Of course, that’s only my two cents - but I regret my purchase and I’m sad I can’t even hand the game to a friend so he can test for himself.
Peace.
i’m so against vehicle deformation!!!
the thing is, you will worry more about damage control than actually enjoying your racing (and no, i’m not the kind that like to crash all the way up to the front, i take alot of integrity in my racing). this is why i hated nfs prostreet.
besides, the extra programming to include damage in gt5 will come at a price, like a drop in the beautiful graphics, game physics, less car/tracks, etc.
if polophony digital wants to do something extra for the full version, rather work on stuff like tyre smoke and skid marks, 60fps replays, etc.
i just hope that polophony digital remember that not all ps3 gamers has access to online gaming and downloads(like myself), so please don’t let we miss out too much on extra content.
i got gt5 prologue yesterday, and i’m wishing the days away untill the release of the full version
I would agree, crumpled bodywork will do nothing for the game. If it is realistic damage i.e. the suspension bends, chassis bends or whatever then after 90% of accidents it will be game over so what is the point.
I think it should be optional. I like driving games and deformation which includes chassis, suspension collapsing, and all the other variables should be allowed, and would love to have this extended to multiplayer, but I know not everyone likes this so the chance to turn it off should be allowed.
Even should go as far as having Ferrari’s not turn over through battery failure if you haven’t used them for a while.
