GTA IV censored in Australia
The BBFC didn’t censor it in the UK. The USK didn’t censor it in Germany. The ESRB didn’t censor it in America. But the OFLC have seen reason enough to make Rockstar produce a special, cut version of Grand Theft Auto IV for Australian audiences.
Rockstar haven’t said what has been cut from the game, however previous GTA games have seen the removal of prostitutes roaming the streets, so perhaps the same thing has happened again here. We won’t know until either Rockstar say something, or when the game hits on the 29th April. The problem in Australia is the fact that the OFLC don’t have a rating for 18+ games; the highest rating they give out is the 15+ that GTA IV has received. Even the New Zealand OFLC rated it uncut thanks to their clearly superior system.
The BBFC managed to accidentally leak some of the content found within the game, which Videogamer were quick enough to pick up (some of it has now been edited at the request of Rockstar). Because it’s not often we talk about masturbation here on Playstatic, here’s some of the highlights (potential spoilers):
“The game includes several uses of very strong language and frequent use of strong language. The very strong language occurs within ‘cut scenes’ in which the story and character development take place, in spoof television episodes and during a stand up comedy routine.”
[…]
“Sex references also occur during cut scenes, including references to strong sexual behaviour. During gameplay the character can pick up prostitutes. What follows is an un-detailed portrayal of masturbation, fellatio and intercourse. The character can also visit lap dancing clubs and request a private dance. While the game contains sexualised dancing and the portrayal of sex, there is no sexualised nudity.”
The above picture has been censored, however the quote you just read is what Rockstar were trying to hide. But alas, Australians will likely feel hard done by because of this. There are ways around it of course: just import a PS3 copy from America or the UK, since PS3 games are all region free. It’s extra hassle, but it’ll be the complete experience that way.

You can also import for the 360 from the UK, because they’re both PAL territories.
