No sense of Achievement with PS3
Rumours were abound that Sony would be using “Entitlements” in an attempt to copy the rather popular “Achievement” system the Xbox 360 has. It has now been confirmed that no such system will exist, but it could do. Confused? Read on.
Basically, there will not be a running tally of your “Entitlement” score. However, developers can, if they wish, include a system that does something similar.
“We didn’t mention that [Entitlements], but it is our intention that we would have it — although I think it would be game-centric. It’s very difficult to draw analogies [between] your success on SOCOM and your success on Madden. Madden players care about peoples’ success on Madden,” said Jack Tretton, Sony Computer Entertainment America exec VP. “So the publisher will have the flexibility to have a robust ranking system, on a game-by-game basis.”
Sony have also stated that all their first party games will feature such a system. However, none of the launch titles do, so presumably it’s games after the launch. In affect, you could see some sort of award/reward system, but it won’t be as well managed as the 360 Achievements are.
It’s a strange move by Sony, because Gamerscore and Achievements have become so popular on the 360. Everyone likes to have a nice big Gamerscore. People even try and make a bit of money out of the obsession now too, so Sony could have jumped on the bandwagon and won back some hearts. Of course, some people won’t be put off by this as achievements mean nothing to them. Quite rightly so too, they can detract from the fun somewhat, and people become overly obsessive by them, and go to any means possible to get the achievements.
So does this dissapoint any of you? Are you disheartened by the fact you can’t get anything for your troubles? Or does this come as some light relief to you, knowing that you can relax in the knowledge that you don’t look crap compared to everyone else? Ah, the taking back of previous lies.
Yup. Do I smell a classic sony move? *sniff sniff*
