IGN unwraps Playstation 3

Those lucky sons of bitches at IGN got a present from Sony, a large brown box containing a prototype Playstation 3 along with some cables, a controller and a bunch of games. Unfortunately a rumor turned out to be true, you’ll have to buy an extra cable to fully enjoy High Definition.

The retail console comes with 4 cables, but one of them is particularly interesting, the composite video cable. This piece of crap doesn’t allow High Definition images, it only support a crappy 480i resolution. For the full 1080P experience you’ll have to buy a seperate Component(1080i) or HDMI cable which is kind of ridiculous when Sony is promoting High Definition so heavily. You can however use your Playstation 2 Component cable which will go up to 1080i.

    The following cables are included:

  • Ethernet: UTP cable to connect your console to the internet
  • USB: to connect your controller to your console
  • Power Cable
  • Composite Cable

As you can see on the pictures, there’s a fifth cable included which looks like a memory card adapter. This won’t be included in the retail package but will be sold for an additional $14,99.

And yes, those discs you see are recordable discs without any art printed on it. The games haven’t gone gold yet so this is a temporary solution. You’ll also notice 2 Motorstorm discs, but these presumably feature 2 different maps because it’s highly unlikely the game will ship on multiple discs.

Bah again. You WILL get 1080p with component but ONLY for games. You guys need to stop messing this up already! Same thing with the 360 when 1080p support comes out in the dash update.

Too bad almost no tv (if any) supports 1080P via component. I haven’t seen any Sony spokesman confirm your statement and the same goes for the Xbox 360.

They don’t have to, component supports 1080p, period. The reason that HD-DVD and Blu-ray does not support 1080p over component is because of AACS compliance. The only certified AACS delivery methods are VGA and HDMI/DVI.

The claim that no tv supports 1080p over component is dubious at best and seems more of an assumption that all 1080p tvs have hdmi so therefor they can’t support 1080p over component. I highly doubt that to be factual but I would love to hear from someone who owns a 1080p tv and can tell us on launch day.

What? Yes every studio is going to manufacture an entire mold just for a test build of its software.

I just think it’s a little too close to launch for the system to be this unpolished! (not literally, the console is quite shiny).
Oh and software requires no “mold”.

Component cables is capable of 1080p but most 1080p TVs will not accept 1080p signals over component so you almost have to use HDMI
