More PS3 games are installable
A couple of days ago we told you about the possibility of installing a part of Genji 2 on your hard drive which would reduce loading times quite a bit. The guys over at Gamefront have received word that this will be possible with other titles too.
Ridge Racer 7 and Mobile Suit Gundam have been added to the list of games where this is possible. Ridge Racer 7 will take up 5 GB of space, but it’s unknown how much Mobile Suit Gundam will consume at this point. As time goes by and games will get bigger it’s likely this size will increase and people with a 20GB PS3 system can’t really profit from this feature when they want to install multiple games.
I like this feature very much, the already silent Playstation 3 will only become more quiet when there’s less Blue-Ray activity. What do you think about it?

I think for those people that only ever own a handful of titles at one time (or everyone on launch day/year) that the feature will be a welcome speed up for the system. Won’t be very nice for the people, like me, that end up owning tons of titles for a system. Another thing to consider would be the wear and tear on that this creates on the hard drive. One nice thing about the 360 is that you can swap out the HD if it dies, with the PS3 you’re going to, like the batteries, have to send in the unit to get it replaced. Makes me think of Apple, sacrificing convenience for design.
u stupid idiot u can easilyswap it for another laptop hdd
Huh?
I own both a 360 and a PS3 and I can tell you that the ps3 does not need to be sent off to swap the HDD. You can install any 2.5inch SATA drive on the ps3. I installed a 250GB one myself the other week. It only cost half the price I paid for the 360 120GB drive. In fact the instruction on how to change the HDD are supplied with the ps3.
Ok, I just realised I replied to a post that is 2 years old. The OP probably knows about the HDD by now.
I really couldn’t care less… Developers these days invent new ways to ‘preload’ levels during gameplay right? I believe GoW won’t have any ‘loading’ screens.
Actually, it has been said in the past that the PS3 will have a user replacable hard drive, and will support any 2.5inch SATA drive you want to put in. I’ve been planning on swapping my 20gig out for a 160gig drive in a few months.
The pictures I’ve seen have a little hard drive bay on the bottom.
You can see it in the below image link.

Oops. Grabbed the wrong image.

A guy rubbing a PS3?
You need to look at the bottom right of the image that shows the side of the PS3. There’s a rectangular cover there that I had seen that is the right size and shape to be a HD bay.
I just had this confirmed by the official PS3 website, #8 on this site also says that you will be able to swap the hard drive out.
(After much searching, I found a single image showing that side of the system.
Image 7 shows the bay cover with more detail.)
I remember Half-life2 on the original xbox having this feature. It anoyed the hell out of me. Al that waiting till the data is copied when you just want to play for a minute or two.
If I want to install games on a HDD I’ll buy a PC. I like the fact that games are streamed from DVD so you don’t get diskspace problems when owning many games. Using HDD cache is more then enough of a speed up for me.
Install games that you’re playing at the time. Like if you’re playing Mobile Suit and Genji around that time, have those two installed, and when you’re on a binge for Ridge Racer and Genji just have those two installed.
I’m thinking that most games, although they’ll need the install, won’t be worth it. I’m thinking the games like oblivion and other rpg/mmorpgs, and other killer apps are going to be installed on people’s hard drives constantly, and other games just streamed.
The PS3 makes itself less and less like a game console and more and more like a PC everyday.
Makes sense, really. It’s the best place for it to compete with a $500 pricetag. It looks downright cheap for a PC of its capability.
It even has Linux.
All I know is, my roommates are going to be hating life when I unplug their 360 after playing PGR3 and put in Riiiiiiidge Raaaaacer7 in all it’s 1080p 60fps glory
that has to be the most retarded comment i have ever heard

So now you have to install the games to speed up loading times. Why? BluRay. And Sony stiil try to make you think its an advantage to have one. It can hold so much more Data. Yes it can. But to play it without the long load times you have to take it off the disk and put it on the Hard Drive. So really, the BluRay is no benefit at all for games.
It still is an advantage. The way that the PS3 games utilize the hard drive is actually very clever. The level geometry and all the other information is still stored on the bluray disc, but the texture data is less predictable on when it will be needed, so they instead install the texture data on the hard drive. That way they can be bringing in two separate streams of data to the game. One of the game level direct from the bluray drive, and one for the textures to the level from the hard drive. They could theoretically do both from the bluray drive, but then it would only operate at the speed of the disc and they would have disc contention between the two separate threads running on separate SPEs. Some developers don’t want to limit themselves in that way if they have a way to avoid it.
Xbox360 games do not have a way to avoid it in all cases due to the hard drive not being standard, so they just stick to the easy but slow way of running everything off the dvd and just ignore the texture popin problems.
