Hard on the heels of last week’s World of Warcraft free download for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, Activision has announced that this week fans of the game can look forward to another free downloadable song. Another bit of news that concerns the Guitar Hero franchise comes from The Wall Street Journal which hints at the hard rock band Van Halen as a possible band to frontline another Guitar Hero expansion ala Aerosmith and Metallica.

On Thursday, July 3, Activision will make the award-winning “Top Gun Anthem” available for free on the Playstation Store as a “special Fourth of July treat.” How kind of them!

First Aerosmith, then Metallica; Van Hallen to follow?

Equally exciting is the high possibility of a Van Halen-centric Guitar Hero iteration coming sometime in the future, since “Activision is in serious discussions with Van Halen about showcasing that band in Guitar Hero,” reports Wall Street Journal. We’ll have more on this as it develops.
