Sony’s profits have been hit for massive damage
While Microsoft might be taking in the money at a pretty good rate, things aren’t looking so good for Sony. In Quarter 2 of this year, Sony took in only $14 million in profits, which turns into a loss of 94%. Ouch.
The embattled Japanese group revealed an operating loss of 20.8 billion yen (£93 million) in the quarter, down from an operating profit of 74.6 billion yen a year earlier.
The figures included a 51.2 billion yen provision for charges linked to the recall of some 9.6 million potentially combustive laptop batteries that Sony supplied to a string of manufacturers including Dell, Apple and Lenovo.
Net profits for the quarter plunged 94.1 per cent to 1.7 billion yen.
One of the two main causes for this massive loss of profits is of course to do with the fact of the PS3 being delayed in Europe. However, the second and main cause of the loss in profits is do with the fact that, as mentioned above, Sony had to recall 9.6 million of their laptop batteries due to the possibility of overheating.
Despite this massive loss, Sony are still sticking to their guns (a little less then half way down the page) about shipping 6 million PS3 between now and March of 2007.
So, Sony lost 72.9 billion yen between this time last year and this time this year thus leaving them with only $14 million. How will this affect them, if at all? You can voice your opinions and thoughts below. However, only time will truly tell just how much massive damage this will really cause to Sony in the not so distant future.

… Harsh for Sony. But they’ll pull through, they always do.
6 million between now and march……. it could happen lets just hope they don’t use the same factory and production standards that made them batteries(unlikely) otherwise the PS3 could become the first exploding console
whahah That’s something I’d like to see…
Loss of 94%?
That’s almost everything. Ouuuuuch. Love that picture though.
I link Sony’s woes to its production of the blapshemous film, The Da Vinci Code. I was offended and protested in several of the over 2000 protest nationwide. Since then, like it or not, Sony’s fortunes have been going down, down, down…
I don’t think it’s because it offended people’s religious beliefs, but it offended their senses, like sight and sound.
No, it’s because of its production of the blasphemous Giant Enemy Crab Destruction Simulator. Members of the Friends of Shellfish Blue Oyster Cult have started boycotting them worldwide and like it or not, Sony’s fortunes have been going down, down, down…
Seriously though, I’m a Christian myself and I didn’t “boycott” it, I just “neglected to go see it”. I also neglected to go see Talledega Nights and I’m neglecting to go see The Prestige :’(
I don’t think boycotting one movie would do a whole lot of massive damage.
I’m Catholic, and I seen it and read the book and its an alright “story”. If your faith is so weak that it is challenged by a “story” and you feel the need to make a scene by boycotting something it say more about you than it does the content of a fucking “story”.
On a related point I also read Holy Blood and the Holy Grail (factual book the Da Vinci Code is based on) heavy going but presents some rather interesting conclusions that really seem easier to believe than Jesus being the son of God.
