PS3 downloadable games get limited
In a recent interview, John Hight, the director of external development at Sony Computer Entertainment Santa Monica, gave an interesting answer with regards to the size of PS3 downloads. They have a limit of 500MB, ten times more than that of Microsoft and their Arcade offering.
The reason is obvious: whatever PS3 system you buy, you’ll get a minimum of 20GB space, rather than the 64MB that Core 360 owners have. This is great, because it means games can become longer and better, with better graphics and hopefully better gameplay.
Hight also goes on to say there won’t be any retro offerings from first party developers. That will all be third party. Will they have the same retro games as the 360? They could never have the same as the Wii of course, since Mario belongs on one system and one system only.
FiringSquad:We have heard that there will be no “retro” downloadable games released for the PS3 (a la certain games on Xbox Live Arcade and the Wii Virtual Console). Is this correct and if so why was the decision made to release mostly original titles for the console?
John Hight: First party development wants stylish games that are fun. Our goal is to provide gamers with cool experiences that they’ve never seen before. Sony’s third party publishers will undoubtedly provide updated versions of classic arcade games.

FiringSquad:Microsoft has a policy of not releasing an Xbox Live Arcade game that will be larger for one of their memory cards to carry. Will there be a similar policy for PS3 downloadable games?
John Hight: We’ve arbitrarily set a limit of 500MB to keep download times reasonable. Since we’ve got plenty of HD space we can accommodate even bigger games and a lot of them
Pretty good then for those that have been able to get their hands on a PS3. It will be interesting to see, in a year from now, exactly who has the best offering of game downloads. The 360 and it’s Arcade, the Wii and it’s Virtual Console, or the PS3 and it’s, er, Game Downloads?

M$ needs to get the 50mb limit sorted pretty ficking soon, though they probably won’t realise this for a long time to come.¬_¬
yeah i would agree the 50mb limit is to er… Limiting, you could squeeze a hell of a big/good game into a 500Mb file. Wake up M$ not all of us are limited to a 64mb memory card.
Who cares?! Arcade games are arcade games, you want a big game, and a more in depth game, go buy the standard game on a disk. If you make the games larger, and there is more work going into them but not a big difference gameplay wise, you’ll just end up paying more to buy the game than you already do on xbox live arcade.
Lets face it, I have all three systems, and am still tired from waiting in line…The ps3 should be focusing on delivering something worthwile, as so far I really don’t even play it. The online structure sucks compared to live, and the wii controller is much more in depth than jerking just to shoot a silly free throw. I don’t know, Gears has all my time right now, as well as Rainbow six, rocking some Wii time to boot. Till something of worth shows up, my ps3 is just kind of sitting there doing nothing, and for the love of god they better do something compared to xbox live, cause it’s a fricken joke right now. Hopefully the sony hype machine didn’t get me.
dont believe the hype!!
