Sony promotes Kaz Hirai to lead PS3 era

In a move that further emphasizes many of the problems Sony has been having over the last year with the introduction of their next-generation PlayStation 3, today Ken Kutaragi will take the position of chairman and chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment. Replacing him as Sony Computer Entertainment’s global president and chief operating officer will be Kaz Hirai, previously leading the United States division.

Ken KutaragiAll jokes about massive damage and giant enemy crabs aside, Sony describes the changes as “strengthening” its management line-up in order to better compete with Microsoft’s full year lead and Nintendo’s surprise Wii attack. Simply put, Kutaragi has been sidelined, technically promoted, to a position where he can do less damage than he’s done the past year. Kaz Hirai is known to be both more confident and more tactical in managing his public relations.

According to analysts quoted by The Financial Times the changes may spell an even darker future for the PlayStation brand of hardware itself:

“The appointment of Hirai could be the start of a shift from hardware to software,” said Yuta Sakurai, an analyst at Nomura. “I cannot now imagine a PlayStation4.”

Mr Sakurai said that Mr Hirai’s new global portfolio puts a predominantly software-focused manager in charge of the company, adding that SCE’s future would be shaped by Mr Hirai’s relationship with Phil Harrison, the president of SCE’s worldwide studios.

Kaz HiraiGiven that the PS3’s main problems result from poor hardware choices from a commercial perspective, with Blu-ray and Cell being the main reasons for the immense delays in getting the machine on the market, the analysts may have a point. Biggest challenge for Kaz Hirai and Sony for the next few years is going to be compensating Microsoft’s lead while fighting off the Wii’s innovation-at-a-budget, and the only way they are going to succeed at that is to make sure the games are worth it. Let’s just hope they manage to survive their hardware branch as well, since noone is waiting for another growth market monopolized by Microsoft.

Good analysis. Kutaragi-san has served Sony well, and was long overdue for a promotion (I’ve always argued that he should have taken Springer’s position - although Springer is the better cost-cutter). He has successfully future-proofed the PS3 platform - it will undoubtedly be the ultimate console, technologically, for the next 5 years, and will remain competitve for the next 2-3 thereafter. I could easily see there not being a PlayStation 4 until, say, 2015…

Developing software to fully leverage the beast will be a true challenge. As good as MGS4 will be, it won’t hit its limits. XBox Live has been Live since the original XBox was released, so Sony’s true Achiles Heel is Online Services. I’ve been seriously considering buying an XBox 360 for the “matchmaking” function alone (I’m a 33 y/o casual gamer with a family and a life: and am sick and tired of being killed in 10 seconds by a 13 year old with nothing better to do with their life…).

Although XBox 360 is technically inferior, Sony is at risk of losing me as a customer if they don’t offer a compelling online offering for the casual yet “elevated net worth” (read: large amounts of disposable income) player. With XBox 360, I’ve got an Arcade (casual games), a persistent, portable identity, matchmaking with other online players with similar skills, and a consistent GUI across the entire user experience. Sony’s got some catching up to do…

Promoting Hirai-san was smart. He’s the right inside guy (and at Sony, it would only be an inside guy…) to maximally leverage Kutaragi’s hardware to harness the Internet’s power. Mr. Harrison is one of Hirai’s fair-haired children - I think that he will be entrusted with turning vision into strategy, and peading execution worldwide.

Overall, I’m optimistic about the LONG-TERM health of the PlayStation franchise with this announcement.

That being said, over the next 24 months, excluding MGS, GT (5, or HD?), and FFwhatever, PS3 will be a dog, relative to the XBox 360, for the casual gamer like me. I may end up getting one, anyway…
