Playstation 4 not coming before 2010
The Playstation 3 would have a lifespan of 10 years, that’s what was promised to us a while ago by a bunch of Sony representatives, but it seems that they’re already making different plans. Vice President of Technology for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Paul Holman is not officially announcing a Playstation 4, but he said that it would be far fetched to say that there will be no PS4 because of a management change
While we’re waiting for the Playstation 4, Holman said that Sony game developers are realizing that the PS3 has a lot more processing headroom than they initially anticipated and that this will result in the development of new gaming capabilities. A lot of this processing power will be harnessed by releasing firmware upgrades with new features which will both help developers with their development and gamers with media centre capabilities for those that are interested. You’re already able to install different operating systems on the Playstation 3 as you can read in a previous newspost and although it’s not really working that well, we’re sure that this will be improved over time.
By the time the PS3 will be launched in PAL territories like Europe and Australia, the PS3 will undergo a firmware upgrade but it’s unknown what kind of changes will be made or features added . Perhaps we’ll be able to play the downloaded PSone games on the console instead of beaming them to a PSP. He also said that at least 20 new games will be available on top of the US launch titles.
The rest of the article is mainly consists of some not so very interesting and slightly biased opinions.
In the ongoing DVD format war, it also gives a huge boost to Sony’s push to make the Blu-ray Disc the dominant standard for high-definition DVD players and movie titles (over rival HD-DVD), since the PS3 becomes, for now, the least expensive Blu-ray player on the market. At today’s briefing I was shown the difference between Blu Ray on the PS3 and the traditional DVD playback. The difference was dramatic with clearer and sharper images.
The Xbox 360 has a full year’s head start on the PS3 and Wii, which means it has more third-generation games available for it, and Microsoft has recently added new bells and whistles like an optional HD-DVD player and full-length movie and TV downloads in high-definition. However indications are that it is not hitting its sales targets in the USA and this could be a problem as both Sony and Nintendo roll out competitive products.
The Wii can’t match the PS3 or the Xbox 360 in terms of realistic graphics or movie playback, but it is significantly cheaper $395 in Australia. It also has its own set of innovative technologies and will appeal to families whose idea of fun does not necessarily entail eviscerating alien monsters.
You shouldn’t worry too much about the title of this article, the Playstation 3 will have a lot of good games coming out, even after the release of the Playstation 4. We’re seeing this right now with the Playstation 2 which has still quite a bunch of games coming in contrary to the Xbox which has been completely dropped by Microsoft.

In my opinion ,the Playstation 4 should come out well before 2010.
This for the following reasons:
1)It should be conceived as “what the playstation 3 should have but it doesn’t have” such as a Holographic Versatile Disk drive ,2 Giga XDR RAM,1 Giga GDDR3 VRAM
2)6 Cell Processors (Ver 2.0 without the glitches and shortcomes as in the current version) Dedicated to Specific Tasks and 6 othe cell processors as controll and backup (or dedicated to power demanding app) alternatively 6 other more but wired and integrated in a similar way (so total of 18 processors) as the 3 processors in the x box 360.Thus a decision on the overall cost should be taken
3)Region Free games and Programs as well as support and capability to access any Cd format ,DVD format and BlueRay Hd-Dvd format.Also full compatibility to Linux OS.
4)Price then could be on the 400 $ 350 E Range initially with a drop eventually of 20/30 % on the 2nd or 3rd year of launch.Even the time frame could be revised considering a European Launch scheduled at March 2007 ,Christmas time 2007 or mid 2008 could be possible.
5)Most important ,A research of capable media partners should be sought to provide :1) Capability to play all Nintendo Games,2)Majority of ,circa 80 % of, Pc Titles ,possibly using a program similar to Direct X or DirectX/Ps Converter, 3)Movies with a editable content and/or with hidden sceenes and Takes so to give chance to the viewer to modify or choose preferred Storyline.
This to take 80-90 % of the market ,and at least 40-50 of the P.C. market/Home Entertaiment Niche
O.K. some suggestions maybe are over the line but I’m interested to Know what is possible and what are the visible or perceivable shortfalls of the Ps3 as of today.

Playstation 4 would probably be out in 2011 or 2012 because sony is making no return on there current Playstation 3 investment. Every Playstation 3 sold SOny is losing about $307 per unit.
Many game developers are not even making as many games for Playstation 3 because of the vast costs as well as they do not have enough user base considering that PS3 Games will only be Profitable at 500,000 Units Sold.
Citing average development costs per title at $8.6 million, Namco Bandai president Takeo Takasu has said that the company must sell at least 500,000 copies of every PlayStation 3 game in order to make a profit quote.
“We have to sell at least 500,000 copies per title worldwide to make a profit on PlayStation 3 games,” said Takasu.
Lets not forget that Ken Kutaragi, grandpappy of the PlayStation recently got fired from his postilion to be replaced by Kaz Hirai.
The future of Playstation as whole looks dim. Microsoft the monopolist will eventually end up ruling the video gaming business just like they done the desktop business.

Thus on a second thought,706 $ (307 $ undercost value + 399 retail price) as industrial cost or breakeven cost of a ps3 considering what there is inside and analogous performances in a pc seem high.probably the Real industrial cost for the machine would be around the 600-650$ range (still comparing to what you can buy with the same amount of $ in the pc world and have similar performances)
even the breakeven values given to software wold seem a little skewed to the overconservative side (that 17.2 $ for a game that goes out at retail at 60$ and considering a markup of retail of 100%,or less for software but still considering that retail takes the game at say 45$ ,the remaining 28 $ (45-17.2 for development cost) would sum packaging,medium (how much a virgin blue-ray disk may cost?)and other expenses.Therefore to me it would seem that or the estimate of 8.6 million $ for a game is a little too high (what the heck,you can produce a woody allen movie with that amount of money) or 500,000 copies per title ,too pessimistic (I would rather say 100,000-200,000 copies per title so that a producer takes in consideration the project.

The PS4 will be a marvel of technology once it’s released. Some possibilities are as follows:
1. The PS4’s Processor could be an Intel Processor, making it more Windows friendly and blowing Microsoft’s and Nintendo’s processor ability out the window. Like it isn’t all ready?
2. The online capabilities of the PS4 will improve,competing highly against Microsoft’s XBOX Live.
3. The interactive revolution of gaming will also be improved on the PS4. Come on, is SIXAXIS in any comparison to Nintendo Wii’s?
4. The Playsation 4 HOPEFULLY will become smaller, so no rumors of “My house burnt down because of the Playstation 3″ will ever happen again.
These new concepts of the Playstation 4 will hopefully bring down the price, because forking over $600 was well worth it, but it also left a huge hole in my wallet.
ummm, no offense, but if you put windows on a ps(anything), i think it might explode. pretty much the biggest thing the ps3 could work on would be ram. i mean, we’ve got the “most powerful gaming system” yet it has 265megs of ram…. that makes perfect sense. the xmb looks beautiful, but lacks many things that a computer freak would love to have. the availability of being able to install another OS on any gaming system is a big attraction. the ps3 cn run fedora core 5, but it is quite slow and glitchy with only 265megs of ram to run it on. it might run fine if the video card didnt share the ram. if it had its own memory then the other os should run fine. i guess im a little off topic though… ill vote a hell yes for ps4

If you type in playstation 4 on google then some pictures should come up of the machine, in my opinion it looks VERY similar to the ps3. I havn’t even got a ps3 yet, but by the time i’ve got one then in a couple of years i will probably be told to get a playstation 4. Don’t get me wrong, i’ll probably get it anyway, but i read another artical saying that sony are ALREADY planning a playstion 5 and 6!

There are reasons why consoles can do with limited amount of memory, because games are made so that they fit the one profile just perfect. No need to support 3 different types of videocards thus drivers, no 5 underlaying OS layers. Instead there is one configuration and thus you don’t require 2Gigabyte of memory.
Oh about about the playstation 3, it uses quite expensive memory. XDR to be precise and why? Because it has to be able to keep the SPU’s fed! Now those are hungry beasts and seemingly only XDR has enough bandwidth at acceptable timings to feed them.
i dont know as much about computers as the rest of you but i do know that i just spent 400$ on ps3… they cant be releasing a ps4 already, i dont have the money for that… come on
