Frontlines: Fuel of War new screens
You may remember that this game was shown way back at E3 last year, and was met, on Xboxic at least, with criticism and a dislike for the screenshots. Forward 8 months, and we have a new batch of screens that are considerably improved over what we saw last time, and make the game actually look quite good now.
Firstly, for those wondering what the hell the game is about, there is a nice summary over on the official website. To save you the trouble of leaving Playstatic, keep reading.
Overview
- Set in a fictional near future based upon the headlines of today, FFOW brings players into the world’s next great war. As society succumbs to a worldwide energy crisis, a new global depression takes hold. Amidst this gritty backdrop, two superpower alliances emerge. Join the battle on the frontlines as the Western Coalition (U.S./E.U.) or the Red Star Alliance (Russia/China)
Features
- Tomorrow’s weapons, today: Over 60 next-generation vehicles and weapons inspired by military designs for the near future. This includes remote controlled drones, gun cams, and next-generation counter-measures systems, all player-controllable.
- Advanced information sharing: Use high-tech combat systems to collect and relay recon, targeting, and threat information between team mates.
- Customization: Players may grow their soldier to fit their play style by choosing a weapons loadout, as well as a technical specialization (role). Each role will also upgrade to provide advanced equipment and abilities. It is a mix of RPG-like depth and FPS accessibility
- Frontline combat system: Both in single and multiplayer, players join the forces on the front line. This front requires successful achievement of the non-linear, contextual objectives in order to move forward. The system rewards advancement and keeps players right in the midst of the action.
- Choose your path to victory: Take advantage of a sandbox of destructible elements to create a unique path and strategy through each mission. Instead of failing and re-playing the same sequence of events, players can ‘chip-away’ with varied approaches.
The game is being developed by Kaos Studios, who have several members of the Battlefield 2 team working on Frontlines, so any similarities between the two games is obvious. It will also be the first game developed by Kaos Studios, who are a new development team with no history, yet. Below are five screenshots from the game, and some weapon blueprints for your viewing pleasure.
As you can see, the game looks considerably better than its last outing at E3. The pictures show The Red Star Alliance, and apparently it is the first time anyone has publicly seen the Red Stars’ Recon Drone.
The game looks to have potential, and can hopefully steer itself away from the tag of “Generic Shooter”, and actually stand out on its own merits. The game is scheduled for release “this Fall” on the PS3, 360 and PC. Check out the trailer here.
