Virgin Megastore - campsite for PS3 customers

Following a spate of British police requests to forego a midnight launch of the Playstation 3 in the UK, fearing dangerous situations for camping customers, the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street is opening from 12 noon today.

The store opening, 12 hours prior to the official launch, is offering a makeshift “campsite” for customers on its lower floor in order to provide a safe environment for eager customers.

“the lower ground floor of the store “will be turned into a ‘campsite’ to ensure fans stay comfortable and safe”. Entertainment, refreshments and “surprise events” are promised, and the first customers to arrive will receive official PlayStation merchandise”

As it stands, Virgin will be one of the few stores to open midnight launches. GAME is foregoing a midnight launch on police consultation and will open at 7am Friday morning instead, but only to those 150 customers that pre-ordered.

Police concerns regarding the UK launch stem from the chaos that occurred amidst the US launch back in November last year. Regarding my own concerns for a clamour to purchase Playstation 3 consoles in Australia, I questioned my local EB retailer what they were expecting, his response was simply, “This is Australia, dude. No problems on launch haha”. I share his optimism in preparation for tonight’s Australian midnight launch.

sad or what!

The Sony spokesman in Australia stated that the British were just being overcautious haha. I don’t think there’s going to be ANY real authouritive presence in Australia at all.
