THQ announces Cars: Mater-National

Did anyone not hear about, see an advert for, or accidentally view the Pixar film Cars? Sure, it may have been a children’s film, with a franchised game (on practically every console available at the time), but it sold ridiculously well. What happens when something does well? They make another. So it’s no surprise, THQ has just announced a sequel to Cars, the official game of the film, for practically every console known to man.

While there hasn’t been a second film announced, THQ has just released details for the new game, Cars: Mater-National, for all consoles barring the Xbox and PSP. Set in the hick town of Radiator Springs, the main location of the original game and film, a new cast of international characters will be competing against Lightning McQueen in the First Annual Mater-National Race Festival.

The game features an open world, new tracks, mini-games and more than 10 multiplayer games. The multiplayer aspect of the original Cars interactive experience was severely underdeveloped.

Considering the original Cars shipped more than seven million units globally, the second installment is sure to do well. In fact, Cars was an enjoyable and well-produced game, featuring excellent voice-overs, smooth graphics on any system and enjoyable game play. With THQ back behind the wheel, Cars: Mater-National is sure to be a hit, with a second Pixar film the next logical progression.
