Heavenly Sword developer says Multiplayer a possibility
Heavenly Sword, one of the most anticipated games on the PS3, might be getting a multiplayer mode, according to Ninja Theory co-founder Tameem Antoniades.
In an interview conducted by Eurogamer, Antoniades mentioned that whilst the multiplayer feature will not be included at launch, it’s a strong possibility it will be included further down the track.
There’s no multiplayer mode in Heavenly Sword as our focus was always to create an intense personal experience; it would have been too damn complex to deal with that as well. We did, however, develop the combat system using multiplayer test levels, as it’s a great way of soak testing and balancing it.
Testing the fighting and gameplay multiplayer seems like an excellent way to develop a game, a number of beta trials have recently been announced and are under way, including Warhawk, Halo 3 and shortly, Killzone 2. But, it’s nice to see the developer of single-player games also thinking outside the traditional game testing style, which is usually a single player pointing out the glitches.
Antoniades continues to comment, elaborating on the multiplayers inclusion;
So who knows? Maybe we will decide to go down that route sometime soon. And when we do, it won’t just be slapped-on to please marketing tick-boxes. You can be assured that we have our sights on multiplayer.
With mainly testing and bug finding remaining, Heavenly Sword is already 90 percent complete, according to Antoniades, and is confident the extended time will be used wisely adapting further to the PS3 complex architecture;
We are pushing it bloody hard - that’s for sure! But this is our first-generation engine for PS3, so there’s certainly a lot more in the machine to give. And, more importantly, there’s more in us to give it.
Wonder if they can push it as hard as the guys doing Ninja Gaiden Sigma are, having smoked a few PS3 dev machines already!
The full interview is up on Eurogamer as we speak, however there’s plenty of juicy info to be found, so expect to see a few more articles pop up on Playstatic in the near future.

This game is shaping up to be a killer app for the PS3. There are so many AAA titles coming out for the PS3 that it will own the 360 in every way. In the PS3’s corner, we have Heavenly Sword, Lair, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Killzone 2, Warhawk, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, FF13, FF13 Versus, MGS4, Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, SOCOM, Little Big Planet and Home. In the 360’s corner, we have Halo 3, Forza Motorsports, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and maybe Mass Effect. All the games listed for both systems are exclusives and that’s why my money is on Sony to win the next gen console war. The PS3 has a stronger lineup of highly anticipated games, whereas the 360 is banking on pretty much just Halo 3. Then again, MS did hint on the PS3’s success by releasing a PS3 wannabe version of the 360 called “The Elite”. This move just proves that MS couldn’t get things right the first time. From the red rings of death to overheating problems, the 360 is plagued with bugs. I’m just glad that this type of bug is not contagious among consoles.
