Firmware 1.80 coming tomorrow, upscaling finally available
It looks like Sony managed to sneak in another firmware before they release the highly anticipated 2.00 version. Tomorrow, May 24th you’ll be prompted to download Firmware 1.80 for your Playstation 3 which will bring you a couple of exciting new features.
The first mayor improvement is that from now on you’ll be able to upscale your DVD movies, PS1 and PS2 games to a 1080P resolution on a compatible HDMI TV set. This means that both DVDs and games from previous generations won’t look like utter crap anymore, but instead they’ll look quite a bit sharper and more detailed.
Secondly, you’re now able to use remote access on your PSP over the internet. You can access the content on your PS3 from everywhere around the world as long as you have a broadband connection available. We’re not entirely sure how the quality of the image will hold up since it’s already a bit toned down on your PSP screen but it’s a great feature nevertheless. Another feature is that you can also access PS3 content from a PC or laptop if you have DLNA3 enabled.
- DVD-ROM (including DVD Video content) can only be upscaled with HDMI compatible TV sets.
- Use of Remote Play requires a powered up PS3 with Version 1.80 as well as PSP firmware version 3.50 which will be available at the end of May.
- DLNA – Digital Living Network Alliance.
The 1.80 Firmware also contains a bunch of other enhancements like the ability to print photo images stored on the PS3’s hard disk with a selection of Epson printers. There will be more small things like this but these haven’t been announced and we’ll have to find out for ourselves.

Well chuffed about the upscaling of DvD’s and ps1/ps2 games, as i haven’t got a upscaling DvD player (except noisy 360) also being able to play mp3’s from my PC will be nice, i just hope that i can play mp3’s during gameplay soon. Interested to see how the upscaled ps1 games will look now, as my god they look blocky at the moment on big tv’s.
Actually as far as i know, and as far as i can tell, the 360 doesn’t do any kind of upscaling.
Plays in 720 on my TV through the 360.
With a VGA cable it does. Goody Goody yum yum.
lol!
you cannot see the difference between xbox360 upscaling or your hdtv upscaling.
But you prolly have a cheapest ass hdtv that does not have an internal scaler lol.
plus lol@ noobs that “p3 has no ‘ana’ therefore it cannot upscale”
ANd funny how you noobs forget to mention that the PS3 will have even better media center extender capabilities than the crappy xbox360
Not really, as long as they both don’t support Xvid/DivX it’s not suitable as a media center. Sony should either support these codecs or allow RSX access in Linux.
What about other resolutions though?
So fucking childish. Most of you anyway. Technicaly talking that’s a good news we can finaly get the ps1,2 and dvds upscaled. Why do you need to compare to 360 guys. i got both console and both got good feature. How many new demo on 360 go on xboxic, I do prefer the ps3 on the technical level but where are the games? or even demos. Tomorrow I’ll be trying the demo of DIRT on 360 nice but I’ll be watching or playing games on 1080p on ps3 also very nice.
Well just quickly tested this with God of War 2 and the improvement is massive not only can you choose full screen you can have ’smoothing’ or AA as we all know it. Will have to test DvD’s later.
Just checked out a couple of DvD’s to assess the quality of the upscaling, i am comparing this to Sky HD btw, it is very impressive very impressive indeed. I used Flying Daggers for the colours used in the opening sequence and i used Revenge of the Sith’s opening space battle for the sheer amount of moving objects flying around. Both of these films i have seen on Sky HD, the PS3 is at the very least equalling Sky HD if not improving the picture quality. Guess i’ll be going through my entire DvD collection now.
Nice job Sony you certainly shoved two fingers upto to all the geeks who said the PS3 would not be able to do upscaling due to lack of a hardware scaler or the sheer amount of processing power needed to upscale and play back HD at the same time.
I am very chuffed with this new update i’ll test this on some PS1 games next week (i don’t have any but a m8 does) and see if it can perform a miracle and remove the block’ness from them, now that would be impressive.
I agree 100%, I think I going to get rid of my dvd player , it upscales but the ps3 doe a much better job. BRAVO SONY, now give us some kick ass games.
Can it upscale to specific resolutions like 1366×768.
Anybody know?
It doesn’t have exact resolutions like that it has options like double scale or full screen, my guess is if you set the console to 720p (1366*768) then the full screen option will give you exactly that. I have mine set to 1080i and i am getting 1920*1080 from the full screen option and it looks great.
I just tried out Hyper Street Fighter 2 for the PS2 on it and that game looked terribly blocky before, now it looks damn good for such a old skool game.
Watched a DVD last night after updating and i am very impressed, makes justifying the price easier and looks great on my HD TV.
Good work Sony now as freduk says get those AAA to the market ASAP.
