Playstation Portable soon to become Playstation Phone [UPDATE]
In a strange turn of events, well, an ambitious one at least, Sony and BT (British Communications) have just announced that the versatile little gaming-guidebook thing, the Playstation Portable, is turning into a phone.
Update
A recent news report made by BBC provides a few more details on the PSP phone project.
In the beginning the software will only allow communication between PSPs and some BT phones, however the capabilities will then be extended to PCs, fixed lines and mobiles. The service will also only be offered through a BT home internet connection or through a BT Openzone Wi-Fi hotspot.
End Update
Plans to add “wireless broadband communications functions, including high quality handheld video calls, voice calls and messaging” to the Playstation Portable were announced yesterday by BT and Sony.
Over the course of a four-year contract, the two companies have resolved to develop a “raft of extra features”, which will be available across a wide range of SCEE territories, starting in the UK and branching out.
Steve Andrews, BT chief, Mobility and Convergence, said:
“The combination of SCEE and BT working together is a natural fit. Sony is a world-class company producing some of the world’s most innovative electronic devices and BT is at the forefront of communications with the 21CN global platform. The PSP is an excellent device for both gaming and communications, because of its high quality screen and audio capabilities. With over 8 million PSPs shipped across Europe, we are very excited by the opportunity to give customers a whole new communications experience, connecting and seeing friends across the world through BT’s technology.”
David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said:
“It is very exciting for us to be partnering with BT on such a unique project. The opportunity to combine our market leading expertise with BT’s knowledge in communications opens up many possibilities and we look forward to bringing many exciting communication functions to PSP fans.”

The step seems to coincide with the release of the Go!Cam product recently offered by Sony, which is a small clip on USB webcam for the PSP. Mentioning “softphone” in the release, the technologies offered presumably will include VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), which allows voice chat over broadband services, and video chat. Undoubtedly a voice chat headset, as used in the PSP SOCOM games, would be also be taken advantage of.
Finally, here’s something to fully make use of PSP’s functionality. The device, whilst having a fragile screen, is one of the best pieces of portable gaming technology available and this proves it has yet to realise it’s potential.
It has yet to be announced, however, when the software and functions will be made available and what the, presumable, subscription fee to the service will be.

might buy mine back!!!
Yeah seriously. I’m planning on moving to the UK in about two months and this would be perfect for travelling! Not to mention the camera part as well .. that’ll be sweet
only problem is the PSP isn’t that robust
Actually .. now I think about it .. there are plenty of mobile phones that offer a similar VoIP service and are probably alot more robust and portable with a better internet functionality. In other words, I don’t think I could really see myself using the PSP as a phone, but I do like the idea of a camera attachment.
Sounds like a good idea, but I fear for Sony because anything that BT does is terrible! They are complete *uck ups
Seems like a good match with Sony at the moment then.
Me? think I will just stick with my mobile thanks all the same.
Gimmick
not really a gimmick I don’t think. It’s a fairly legitimate use of the technology and making better use of the PSP’s technology, which is at present being wasted IMO. The problem is, the PSP isn’t the ideal portable platform for communication because of its size and frailty.
I don’t know anything about BT but I reckon I might when I get to the UK in a few months time!
BT are shit. Nuff said.
There you go learnt all you need to.
So where you heading to in the UK then?
Bristol, England! I live in Australia atm and have a 5 year visa for the UK.
So yeah, gonna settle in when i get there me thinks!
Bristol is one of the worst places in England. Its so scruffy and Vile. Im not all that far away, but believe me when you hear them speak - just don’t build your picture of Britain on what you see in Bristol…
Talking of Bristol. June7th Channel 4 8pm. HowClean is your house? one done in Bristol. If I remember rightly, the dirty bastard has a union jack toilet seat…and he’s a Biker
I’ve had a complete change of heart man. I’m not moving to Bristol any more. Has alot to do with my gf though, and us not being together any more. So now I have to find somewhere else to go head to. Any suggestions for a place that has heavy music, nice buildings and a god atmosphere?
Glasgow ain’t bad. The nice parts. When people think of england they think central London is always the place to be…but Bournemouth, Brighton, Essex, are ok.. Bristol - Manchester - Liverpool - Plymouth - Birmingham have the worst rep and crime rates.
Haha really? Didn’t know about that! My next plan was moving to Birmingham. Just for the music scene, I’m told its big on metal and hard dance (and probably hence drugs/violence) but I’m willing to take a chance. I’ll probably end up exploring the entire UK region in the end though.
Scotland’s my heritage land so it’ll be keen to see where my ancestor’s came from.
If thats what you are after Glasgow ain’t a bad place to start. I am in edinburgh but the big nights out usually involve a trip through the west.
