There have been many denials from Sony regarding analysts predictions of a Playstation 3 price drop, then Mr. Sony President Ryobi Chubachi teased us with the possibility of a PS3 price drop and now none other than Sony CEO Howard Stringer has kind of confirmed a price drop is coming.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Stringer rather candidly mentions, along with ramblings regarding something to do with embracing “the full bandwidth of Playstation 3”, which doesn’t particularly make sense, that people would like a lower price point.

“I think that the public would like the cost to be lower, there’s no question about that.”

And how much lower?

“That’s what we’re studying at the moment; that’s what we’re trying to refine.”

And we’ll know when?

“And the answer is, of course it will get to Christmas”

Some predictions have already been made that the price cut could be up to $100US off the current price of the console. However, there has been no official word from Sony regarding even an approximate number.

Along with bringing hope of a price decrease, Stringer also notes that the Nintendo Wii has sold well because of its lower price point. Stringer admits that the Wii has “been a successful enterprise and a very good business model compared to ours…because it’s cheaper”.

It would have been a difficult statement to make, considering its acknowledging Sony’s (or Kutaragi’s) failings in producing the PS3.
