Sony to support homebrew on PSP?

While Sony is struggling to keep the PSP firmware secure to prevent homebrew software, they might actually start supporting these home made applications in the future. According to Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, the PSP homebrew crowd has delivered some fine work in the past and they’d like to tap into that a little more.

Tretton said that he thinks that homebrew is something that is in the works. He has seen some of the stuff that has been created and it’s incredibly creative and that he’d like to tap into that a little more. Dave Karraker, senior director of corporate communications with SCE jumped in however and said that there are several problems with homebrew software of which viruses and malicious software created by dirty hackers are a few of them.

“I think that is something that is in the works,” he said. “We certainly see some of the stuff that has been done via homebrew, and it’s incredibly creative. And I think we’d like to try and tap into that a little bit more.”

Dave added to Jack’s comments by saying that moving to forward with homebrew software has one main hurdle to cross — figuring out how to support the new content without putting the PSP at risk.

You know some hacker wants to brick your baby for fun.

A whole bunch of homebrew software is already available but you have to hack your PSP’s firmware in order to use it, which might be illegal in some countries and it’ll also void warranty. Nevertheless, it would be great to legalize home made applications such as small games, the possibilities are limitless.
