It doesn’t take a degree in rocket science to know that fighting games are few and far between on next-gen consoles. This may soon change though, what with Tekken 6 and Soul Calibur IV set for release next year, and now SNK Playmore confirming that their famed fighting series is to debut on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in early 2009.

King of Fighters: Maximum Impact for the PS2

Titled King of Fighters XII, the game was confirmed to be in the pipeline by Yoshihito Koyama at the Tokyo Game Show 2007. Unlike the most recent addition to the series, that is King of Fighters XI for the PS2, the twelfth entry will sport a unique visual style - “3D mixed with 2D”. In other words, the game will be a 3D fighter but with a 2D flair to it. This recreation of the series on the visual front is one of the reasons for its late expected release. Unfortunately, apart from that, no further details were divulged.

Any fighting fans delighted to learn King of Fighters XII will be joining the rest of the fighting club on the PS3?
