PlayStation 3 makes Askmen.com’s top devices of 2007 list

What’s your console of choice? If you’re reading this post, then chances are Sony’s PlayStation 3 powerhouse is some way up on your list – if not right at the top. And who could blame you? Superior performance and design, an on-board Blu-ray player, the famed Cell chip, and some whopping software exclusives looming on the horizon… can’t go wrong really, eh? Well, detractors aside, the PS3 this week finds itself listed by Askmen.com as one of the top five electronic entertainment ‘must have’ devices of 2007.

Further to that, and just to rub fanboy salt into the festering wounds of certain rival platforms, Askmen’s listing does not include either the Microsoft Xbox 360 or the hot-selling Nintendo Wii – writer duly sticks thumbs in ears, pushes out tongue, and waggles fingers joyously.

Of course, some might passionately argue that the Xbox 360 has a wider spread of next-generation games, and some serious ‘killer app’ candidates, or that the Nintendo Wii boasts original demographic-spanning gameplay and massive popularity, but that hasn’t stopped the PlayStation 3 from being the console of choice for the edgy publication.

In a feature showcasing the top-five electronic entertainment devices of the past year, Askmen.com’s list gathers together those products it defines as justifying their elevated prices with worthy amounts of hardware oomph – which might explain why the pocket-friendly Wii is missing.

“Sure, it was released near the back end of 2006 and it’s currently in third place in the console market, but when you re-envision it as a complete home-entertainment center and factor in its recent price drop, the PS3 becomes a grade-A purchase,” enthuses Askmen.

Citing the PlayStation 3’s backward compatibility, high-definition Blu-ray player, 60GB hard drive, wireless motion-sensing controllers, integrated Wi-Fi connectivity, 1080p picture resolution, and “one of the most impressive lists of games on the market,” the Web site concludes that:

“…if you’re looking to knock out your gaming needs, movie needs, and CD needs in one short purchase, the PlayStation 3 is the name of you game.”

For those curious about the other top-tier consumer electronic products honoured on Askmen’s 2007 run-down, they were the $236-$399 Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player, the $430-$500 Onkyo TX-SR605 AV receiver, and the $2,700 Mitsubishi WD-65831 and $1,900-$3,000 Samsung LN-T4665F high-definition televisions.

It’s not often that Sony’s latest piece of gaming hardware finds itself elevated so clearly and positively above its market competition – and actually based on the fact that it costs rather a lot of money no less. Allow us to revel in the moment, if you will.

PS3 rules. Suck balls, Glovner.

Comment by The_Glovner on 2007-10-02 18:12:57 | Reply

Exactly my point.

You see one thing saying the PS3 is a decent bit of kit and a good purchase you then jump on it like a fucking vulture and ignore anything else on the subject that might say otherwise.

Which is why I keep saying that you are a fucking tube.

Just like when people give this site shit over it’s reviews because they don’t agree with it. Whereas I read the review but take it in context along with all other available information allowing me to make an informed choice.

You on the other hand, well if it says Sony then it must be the best.

If you think thats the way to go then fire in, but don’t take the hump when people don’t agree with you otherwise you come off like the fucking arse you present yourself as.

lol @ the above comments.

you will never agree with me when i say:

“the hardware of the xbox360 is almost a complete failure; it breaks down, overheats, scratches discs, doesn’t even read discs from time to time, on top of that it makes a lot of noise.”

yes, the xbox has nice games, but that has nothing to do with the terrible xbox360 hardware, mircosoft forces developers to develop only for 360 by buying them out. it’s not that the xbox can render better games or something.

glover: “xbox is the best because it has exclusive gta3 missions!!”
elias: “xbox gets exclusive gta missions because microsoft paid 50 million dollars to have them not come out on the ps3″

so anyway.
yes the ps3 has the best future, i mean, the hardware is reliable, ready and tested, the media capabilities are great and getting better with every update. upcoming games prove that the ps3 indeed is capable of delivering great gameplay, online and graphics.
you pay for this, and at the moment the price indeed is high. (i dont have a ps3 atm because i need to buy books and food and stuff)

please accept that a lot of people agree that the ps3 is the best machine.

if you think that the xbox360 does not break down at all, doesn’t scratch discs or fails to read them, doesn’t overheat. And it you believe that the awesome hardware of the 360 is the reason why it has the most exclusive titles at the moment, it’s okay!

as long as everybody is happy.

Comment by Veritas on 2007-10-02 23:30:00 | Reply

Actually, the 360 does indeed have better graphical capabilities. I don’t remember the details, but you can ask Curry. The PS3’s capabilities were hyped up, and are now not delivering.

The console only scratches discs when you move it during play, which only a moron would do. Would you shake your stereo while it played a CD?

The console does break down on occasion, but that problem has been all but solved. It has become quieter, and now there’s nary a flaw to be found with it.

As for the games, the games make the machine, and the PS3’s future is bleak, in terms of getting good exclusive deals. MS does indeed have the money to get good exclusive deals, but what matter is that? That’s capitalism, and MS has a good hold on the market because they know where to strike and when. That doesn’t mean the games are going to suck by any means, and developers have stated many times before that they prefer developing for the 360 over the PS3. The market is with the 360 in America and Europe, and that’s where the money is.

Sony did a crap job of breaking into the market Microsoft had already cracked, so it’s going to be a helluva time from now on. They’ve resigned themselves to a permanent place with the silver medal for this generation. Maybe it comes from their philosophy that it’s okay to intentionally fuck over the consumers and steal ideas, and not apologize for it.

Comment by AugustusBot on 2007-10-02 23:41:15 | Reply

360 has a better graphics CARD. But i guarantee you it can’t output the same quality of a picture the the ps3 will be sporting come FFXIII, due to the CELL.

35% failure rate is not ‘on occasion’.

PS3’s future is not bleak at all. Haze, Ratchet and Clank, and MGS4 are just the beginning…

“philosophy that it’s okay to intentionally fuck over the consumers” … Wasn’t Microsoft the company that intentionally released their faulty system a year early in order to beat Sony to the table… a faulty ‘next gen’ system that not only failed to have a next gen video output format (hdmi), but also failed to have a next gen dvd format included? Seems to me like Microsoft is the company that fucked over its consumers.

Comment by Veritas on 2007-10-03 00:59:17 | Reply

When have the Final Fantasy games ever had good graphics outside of CGI sequences? The cell processor will never live up to its supposed potential because no developers are going to put in that much effort.

It’s less than 35%, but actually yes, that is “on occasion”. 50% and up would be “most of the time,” etc. My point stands.

The games you listed (all but one, MGS4, which Konami may force into a 360 release) are laughable. If that’s all you can think of, then yes, its future is very bleak.

If it were a faulty system then far more than “35%” would have broken down. If you were referring to the overheating issues, MS decided to change a component in the hardware to aluminum (causing it to malfunction when the system got too hot) to cut down on the cost of the system during production, which, once again, was a mistake that MS has acknowledged and fixed (far more than Sony has ever done for their customers… free repair? As if).

As far as HDMI goes, I hope you’re joking. The world isn’t even close to seeing HDMI as a standard video output format. Next DVD format? I’m buying a game console, not a DVD player. Why should Microsoft force consumers into buying into a format that isn’t even close to prevalent yet, let alone add an unnecessary feature to a game console (which, if you ask me, even DVDs are a stretch)? If I wanted that, I’d buy a computer.

MS has been nothing but good to its consumers. They understand the balance between providing a good level of customer service with making money. If you want an example of outstanding service (sometimes at their own loss), look at Nintendo. If you want an example of disgraceful service, then all fingers should be pointed at Sony.

NEWS FLASH: AugustusBot has just been savagely owned by the glovner. with a post from glovner that has left mr Bot both reeling in a sea of ownage and unable to come up with a proper retort. Comment by Sage on 2007-10-02 23:41:53 | Reply

I agree with SamiJ. the PS3 has mad potential. but then again so do all consoles(the wii… not so much but it still has some potential) it just depends on what the companies does with their respective consoles from here on out.

you will never agree with me when i say:

“the hardware of the xbox360 is almost a complete failure; it breaks down, overheats, scratches discs, doesn’t even read discs from time to time, on top of that it makes a lot of noise.”

Correct, I wouldn’t agree, your comment is flawed from the outset.

“Is almost a complete failure” is a factual statment. 5-35% can never be considered to be almost all which would suggest at least a majority.

“it breaks down, overheats, scratches discs, doesn’t even read discs from time to time, on top of that it makes a lot of noise.”

Well I still have my launch console so that fucks up the it breaks down and overheats statments, and believe me it has been on sometimes for a long time with no heating issues. As for scratching disks, well again no problems here otherwise I wouldn’t be able to play every single one of my games right up until the point I take them back and trade them in (never with one issue on the quality of the product I am exchanging). Makes a lot of noise, compared to what exactly? Fair enough this may bother some people, but it ain’t loud enough that I here it over the movie I am watching or the game I am playing and really the noise level of a console has nothing to do with whether I would buy it or not.

“yes, the xbox has nice games, but that has nothing to do with the terrible xbox360 hardware, mircosoft forces developers to develop only for 360 by buying them out. it’s not that the xbox can render better games or something.”

Terrible Xbox hardware? Opinion again. I ain’t had any problems with the hardware (see above) and most games I have played have had some sort of “WOW” factor when I have put them on for the first time (with the exception of the shit I shouldn’t have bought in the first place). Microsoft force people to devlop for them? We are still talking about MS here and not some sort of Cuban embrago conspiricy theory here aren’t we? And as for rendering games better (here I get into my opinion based on something I believe I read and perhaps someone else can shed some light on it or even tell me if I have it wrong) well I am under the impression that it can certainly render textures better and more efficently than the PS3 (although render a game better I am sure is a bit of a broad brush statement to make as the rendering doesn’t really make a game) something to do with it creating the textures on the fly rather than being actually coded before reading the information (or something like that, ain’t something I pretend to know a lot about).

“glover: “xbox is the best because it has exclusive gta3 missions!!”
elias: “xbox gets exclusive gta missions because microsoft paid 50 million dollars to have them not come out on the ps3″”

Well thats you trying to put words in my mouth now, never at any point have I said that and wouldn’t even think about slavering that sort of nonsense, reason? because I ain’t a fanboy. I have no doubt in my mind that the exclusive content had a nice big bumper pay packet sticking to it, but hey thats business baby and I have to admit it was a smooth move by MS as these are the games that sell systems, and if your version is better than another your gonna get a lot of extra scalps (when I say better it is worth remembering that me, unlike you, doesn’t come from the school of though that shiny graphics make a perfect game, which is why I have been kinda uninspired by the likes of heavenly sword, meh good graphics shame it’s a button basher.

“so anyway.
yes the ps3 has the best future, i mean, the hardware is reliable, ready and tested, the media capabilities are great and getting better with every update. upcoming games prove that the ps3 indeed is capable of delivering great gameplay, online and graphics.
you pay for this, and at the moment the price indeed is high. ”

Again making factual statments based on nothing but the shite falling out your own spastic mind.

The best future you say? let look at that point in a bit more detail after I rip apart the rest of your nonsense.

Hardware reliable and tested? yeah but not by that many people as nobody is buying in any great hurry and even then to my knowledge there has still been issues with the hardware, oh my god do I mean the mighty Sony can make mistakes too? Yup and as I have said before, my experience with their customer service when there are problems was laughable at best, “the sum of a companies customer service is not how little problems they encounter but how they deal with them when they do”, ain’t me that made that up, that is generally regarded to be truth in business with the public. Media capabilities? oh I’m sorry, you must have thought you were talking to someone that gives a fuck, I use my laptop for media capabilities, the most media capability I expect from my “GAMES” console is the ability to play games (and maybe watch a DVD sometimes). I have a Wii, looked at the browser on that once, never again, because it is a gimmick or an add on for people that don’t have any other way to access the web, because if you had a PC your wouldn’t do your browsing on your console. What it is not is a reason to buy a games console, if you even attempt to pass it off as that then give up your argument now. Great games on the horizon? yeah there was supposed to be great games at launch too, a halo beater was one, it was medicore, a racing one that looked nice but after about half an hour you quickly realise it is all style over substance, the masterpiece that is heavenly sword, yeah could just have got 99 nights a year ago, didn’t look as nice but so what played just as good (which was shite my the way if you never had a shot). So what we got coming? Ratchet & Clank, please, get a fucking grip it’s a platform game nothing more and don’t even pretend it’s a system seller for one minute, MGS4 (is it 4? I can’t remember) great, another MGS game where we take four steps, shoot a gun then get 14 minutes of CGI, back in control turn a corner, more CGI fuck, I would rather watch a movie (don’t get me wrong, it looks nice, but so does Lucy Lui and I would rather spend my time watching her), Final Fantasy, well i’ll actually give you that one, purely because I do like a final fantasy game to waste a good number of hours. All the others I can think of that are noteworthy are multi-platform (albeit that some of them were supposed to be Sony exclusives that were lost, good reason for them being lost as well which will tie in to the “Best future” comment you have made). As for the better online statement, if you believe that with the current setup then you really are fucking blind and stupid (and probably deaf which would explain why you ain’t bothered about the fact you can hardly communicate on the PS3 online).

“please accept that a lot of people agree that the ps3 is the best machine.”

Okay, i will admit that a good million or so people think it is the better machine, are you willing to admit that a far greater number of people think otherwise? Because as much as it may pain you to admit it that’s what all the facts point to.

Okay so all that into account lets go back to your PS3 has the best future nonsense.

PS3 potentially has a very good future, but pontential is nothing if it is not realised. PS3 came to the market late, with a vastly overpriced product compared to the rivals on the scene. It had no “new” games that really warrented a purchase purely for that game (by new, I mean ones that hadn’t been out on the 360 for anything up to a year which were now getting sold at about £20 compared to the £50 asking price of the PS3 version which would have been £10 more expensive than when the game was available on the 360). The reason the console was held back was to allow the inclusion of Blu-ray. Don’t think for one minute that including Blu-ray was for your benefit, PS3 and Blu-ray were released together purely to allow Sony to get a strong hold on the HD format war before it really kicks off (e.g 7mil people buy a PS3, thats 7Mil Blu-Ray players in homes before the war really gets going, giving you a 7Mil head start on your rival) good plan, but backfiring a little as they ain’t shifting the units they hoped because of the price and lack of software support so now they have got themselves into a nasty little catch 22 (which is shown by all the frantic knee jerk reactions and bashin of other consoles) which they can’t work out how to shake off. Now when it comes to a games console the one thing that stands out is the games, exclusives can sell consoles, Sony used to have a lot of exclusives, a lot of these are now multi-platform why do you think that might be? I’ll take a stab, maybe it has something to do with simple base economics, if I make a promise to produce something for someone (what it is doesn’t matter), but then find out a lot more people would like to buy the same product would I refuse to sell it to them out of fear of upsetting the original consumer? would I fuck, I would sell that shit to anyone that even glanced at it because consumer A or consumer B don’t matter worth a fuck to me, all that matters is more money so I can make more products to sell to more people and make more money and on it goes. That is essentially how business works (again this is not my opinion but a fact, if you want to argue otherwise I will be most amused to see how you can refute this). So lets drop Sony into the position of consumer A and MS into consumer B and there we have our multi-platform (ex-exclusives) in reality.

So again back to your statment and how it should be looking now taking the facts into consideration. In my opinion the following is more accurate.

Sony potentially had a very good future with the PS3 based on the hype leading up to release, however with the loss of many exclusives to their competitors, a system priced high over any rivals with features that not everyone will want or make use of, the lagging position in hardware sales (not only has it sold less due to being released a year later but it is actually still selling slower than it’s year old rival) that in turn has a detrimental effect on future software sales which is where the company hopes to actually make some profit to offset the huge losses the PS3 hardware is causing the company to make, the potential future of the PS3 is a lot more in doubt and looking no where near as strong as they once did. They may be able to pull things back but things as they stand do not look promising.

Just remember betamax was the better format, watch many betamax these days do you?

And by the way adding a disclaimer at the end of your post doesn’t give you free reign to post whatever shit you want, it just shows you up to be a cock that doesn’t actually have the conviction to stand beside anything he says, so anything said should really just be ignored as it has no merit anyway.

Whereas I will stand by what I have said while I have some factual evidence to back up my point of view, when you can present stronger facts to challenge my point of view then at this point I may change my opinion, that is how an argument/debate/discussion works don’t bother getting involved if you ain’t capable.

I have a PS3 but it bores me. It must be sheer coincidence that all the games I like… come out on 360 first, and I seem to like playing to get achievements too. Im not bothered about graphics, shadows, picture displays - I like online multiplayer a lot, but each time I have played something on the PS3 online it segregates me to play people by their location server. I hate that !! For me, my beloved 360 number 2 provides everything I need in a console. I just happen to prefer blu-ray movies downstairs so the PS3 is banished to the living room for it’s once or twice a week usage…

That would be me making points that I assume must be right with no factual evidence just purely because it’s me saying it, I think you will find that if I make a statement I at least try and back it up with third party sources which really doesn’t do much for making me arrogant, I can also admit when I am wrong when given some truth to change my opinion.

hi, this goes for everyone:

“if you think that the xbox360 does not break down at all, doesn’t scratch discs or fails to read them, doesn’t overheat. And it you believe that the awesome hardware of the 360 is the reason why it has the most exclusive titles at the moment, it’s okay!”

so please do not insult eachother!

Still no reply from cock knocker I see.

Don’t worry bot, i’ll keep checking, you clearly have all the facts I ain’t got access to and you will eventually get round to explaining why everything I have said is wrong.

Afraid that comes across more as you can’t come up with any reply to the facts I have posted.

I took the time to write it since you always seem to be going on about how you can clearly see the whole situation with the console market and who is going to come out on top, the least you can do is take the time to read it and reply, otherwise you are only fueling the fire that you are nothing more than a shit filled troll.
