SEGA undoubtedly has one of the wealthiest back catalogues of videogame characters in the industry and their not afraid to use them. The firm’s European arm has announced today that it is bringing many of them together to feature in a sports extravaganza for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii. Say hello to SEGA Superstars Tennis.
Similar to Nintendo’s tactics in Mario Tennis, the title will feature a variety of characters from SEGA’s gaming history, including the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Monkey Ball’s AiAi and Amigo from Samba De Amigo. In addition to their own physical attributes, each player (there will be 15 to choose from in all) will also come equipped with their own individual, special skills.
Game modes will include Exhibition and tournament, with tennis courts set in universes from some of SEGA’s biggest titles. Sonic the Hedgehog’s Green Hill Zone and Amigo’s Carnival Park court are those confirmed to appear thus far.
SEGA also promises that, in addition to the Exhibition and Tournament modes, there will be “new and innovative ways of enjoying some of SEGA’s classic titles, plus platform exclusive ways to play the game.” This includes online multiplayer for the PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 builds, a feature that the PS2, Wii and DS versions will sadly lack.
Said Gary Knight, SEGA’s European Marketing Director:
“SEGA Superstars Tennis has the potential to be one of the most fun and accessible sports games ever. The fantastic Sumo Digital team has had access to a wealth of SEGA IP and you’ll be surprised at the gaming icons that will be making an appearance!”
Sumo Digital has previously worked on several PSP ports of home console titles such as Virtua Tennis 3 and TOCA 2.
